For most people as they age reading glasses are a normal part of life. We reach for them every time we want to read the newspaper, a good book or surf the internet. It’s irritating, particularly if you’re out some place and you forgot your glasses you have to hold the menu at arm’s length just to be able to make a decision on dinner.
However, there are some things you can do that can help with your eyesight as you begin to age you might even be able to reverse some of the eye aging. Spending more time reading on our computer or tablet doesn’t have to be the end of our good eyesight.
Your diet can actually have a bearing on your aging eyesight. Did you know if you include sweet potatoes in your diet (daily for best results) you decrease your likelihood of suffering from night blindness? As we age, night blindness can become an issue for so many people. How many times have you heard an older person say, “I have to be home before dark because I can’t really see at night?” My guess is you’ve heard it a lot are you one of the people who’ve started to say it?
Also, macular degeneration is the number one cause of blindness in older people. However, including foods like lettuce, kale and spinach contain lutein which can help prevent macular degeneration as you age. The sun is the main contributing factor for getting macular degeneration, so it’s vital you protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses with good UV protection and protecting your eyes in general.
Your pillow might also have an effect on your chances of getting glaucoma I know, right? If you sleep your head elevated each night, it decreases the pressure on your eyes, therefore, lowering your chances of ever having glaucoma.
Exercising can also help to relieve some of the pressure in your eyes. Walking or jogging are probably the best types to do because if you do anything too strenuous then it can have the opposite effect put more pressure on your eyes than necessary.
Always schedule your yearly eye exams with your eye doctor. If you go every year, you’re chances of finding any type of problem with your eyesight is higher. Your doctor will test you for glaucoma, cataracts and any other type of eye issue you might have. If your doctor does happen to find something, don’t put off having it taken care of as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the worse the condition can become.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is not only good for your overall health, but it can indeed help prevent or slow down eye issues that you might be having because of aging. If you are concerned or feel there might be something wrong, schedule an appointment with your eye doctor and have it taken care of. If you don’t have it checked, you won’t know what steps to take to fix it it might not be near as bad as you think it’s going to be.
Sight is a wonderful thing and you shouldn’t play Russian roulette with it take care of your eyes.
